Needs first: quarry, distance, role

  1. Quarry — rabbits and pigs in cover need a wider, more forgiving view; foxes across open country need tighter image scale.
  2. Real distance — use the range where you normally identify and decide, not a brochure detection figure.
  3. Role — Thermion 2 is a dedicated 30mm-tube aiming optic. Spotting stays on the handheld.

Distance → lens class

As a practical rule: work up to roughly 150 m usually suits a 35 mm-class objective because it keeps useful field of view. Beyond roughly 150 m, prefer a 50 mm or larger lens. If the brief is foxes around 250 m, start in the 50 mm+ class.

Sensor resolution mainly changes field of view and available detail — not raw reach by itself. Match the lens to distance first, then choose whether a wider, more detailed sensor (XQ → XP/XG → XL) improves the actual job.

Thermion 2 naming in plain English

  • XQ — 384-class sensor; typically the widest view in a given lens size among current Thermion 2 options we stock.
  • XP — 640 / 17 µm; more detail and a different FOV trade-off than XQ at the same lens.
  • XG — 640 / 12 µm; finer pixel pitch for image scale and detail at longer work.
  • XL — 1024-class; maximum scene detail when the observation and aiming brief justify it.

  • 30 mm tube mounting — Thermion 2 mounts like a conventional day scope; ring height, eye relief and recoil setup still matter.
  • LRF — choose an LRF model when distance calls are hard in your country; it is secondary to lens class.
  • Battery plan — match spare APS packs to a real night length.
  • Controls and zero — confirm glove use, zeroing workflow and ballistic tools only after the rifle and ammunition are sorted.

Start in the 50 mm+ class. Among current stock that usually means an XQ50 PRO / LRF XQ50 PRO path, or step to XP50 / 60 mm models when you need more detail or image scale — not because a higher sensor letter invents reach on its own.

Is the XL60 always the best Thermion?

No. The Thermion 2 LRF XL60 is the premium 60 mm / 1024-class option when that brief is already clear. Many hunters are better served by a correct 35 mm or 50 mm fit plus a proper handheld spotter.
