With a thermal scope, pitch black stops being a problem. It reads heat, not light, so the fox shows up whether there's a moon or not. Pick your brand below: HIKMICRO, Pulsar, Nocpix, ThermTec, RIX or DNT. Inside 150 m a 35 mm lens does the job; for foxes across open paddocks, go 50 mm. Torn between two? Ask us and we'll tell you straight.

A scope is for the shot, so grab a handheld for the looking. Have a look at Thermal Monoculars Australia or All Thermal Monoculars, and our guide thermal monocular Australia — start with a spotter shows how the two work together. Want to keep your day scope? A clip-on might suit you better. Our clip-on vs dedicated thermal scope guide sets out the trade-offs, or go straight to Thermal Clip-Ons Australia.

Once the lens is sorted, the rest comes down to taste: a built-in rangefinder, a tube or bridge body, battery type and weight.

Why a thermal scope is not a spotter

A thermal scope is built for the shot. Scanning a paddock through one means pointing your rifle at everything that moves, and that's no way to hunt. A handheld finds the animal; the scope comes up once you know what it is. Grab one from Thermal Monoculars Australia or All Thermal Monoculars.

35 mm: fence lines, scrub and mixed paddocks

Most rabbits, pigs and closer foxes around fence lines and mixed country get shot inside 150 m, and a 35 mm scope is spot on for that. It gives you a wider view, so you keep track of things in the scrub. Have a look at the Nocpix ACE L35, BOLT L35R, HIKMICRO Stellar SQ35L 3.0 and ThermTec Ares 335L 2.0.

50 mm: open country and foxes further out

If you're regularly shooting foxes across open paddocks past 150 m, often out around 250 m, go 50 mm. The bigger lens puts more detail on the animal, so you can tell what it is before you take the shot. Good picks: the Nocpix ACE H50R, Pulsar Thermion 2 LRF XG50, Thermion 2 LRF XP50 Pro and HIKMICRO Stellar SH50 3.0 LRF. Want the sharpest picture? The Nocpix ACE S60R runs a 1280 sensor. Don't pick on the detection figure on the box; how far out you can identify the animal is what matters.

Then the extras

A rangefinder tells you exactly how far out the animal is, right from the rifle. NETD is the scope's heat sensitivity; a lower number gives a clearer picture on humid, wet nights. Tube or bridge: a tube sits in normal 30 mm rings like a day scope, and a bridge body has its own mount. Battery: check how long it runs, because you don't want it dying halfway through the night.

Thermal Scopes Australia — FAQ

Why buy a thermal monocular before a thermal scope?

Because it's safer and quicker. You find and identify the animal with the handheld, then bring the rifle up only when you're ready to shoot.

35 mm or 50 mm?

It comes down to how far you shoot. Inside about 150 m, 35 mm does the job. For foxes across open country out around 250 m, go 50 mm or bigger.

Do I need an LRF on the scope?

It's handy if you want to range from the rifle, but it won't fix the wrong lens size. Plenty of hunters range with their monocular and keep the scope simpler, or the other way round.

Dedicated thermal scope or clip-on?

A dedicated thermal scope takes over from your day scope for night work. A clip-on keeps your zeroed day glass and adds thermal when you want it. Have a look at Thermal Clip-Ons Australia or our clip-on vs dedicated guide. Either way, a monocular is still the best way to spot.
