Looking for a lever action rifle in Australia? Pick the cartridge for what you hunt, then the model. A .30-30 handles deer and pigs in close country, .45-70 hits harder on big game in the bush, and a .22 lever is great for rabbits and new shooters. Pair it with a red dot or a low-power rifle scope.

The range includes Henry All Weather and Side Gate models, the Marlin 1894 and 1895 in SBL, Guide Gun and Trapper configurations, the Rossi R95 and Puma, and the Savage Revel. Calibres include .45-70 Govt and .30-30 Win for larger game, .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum for short-range work, and .22 LR for small game.

Picking the right lever action rifle

A lever action rifle is quick to cycle, light to carry and easy to handle in thick bush. Pick the cartridge first, and the rest sorts itself out.

For deer and pigs in close country, a .30-30 does the job. Have a look at the Henry All Weather and Steel side gate models, plus the Rossi R95. If you want a carbine that shares ammo with a revolver, the Marlin 1894 Trapper in .44 Mag and the Rossi Puma are worth a look. Pistol rounds shoot flat enough for short bush shots, but they run out of steam past that, so they aren't for open paddocks.

.22 lever action rifles

A .22 lever is heaps of fun and cheap to shoot. It's also a good way to get a new shooter dialled in before they move up to centrefire. The Henry Golden Boy and Frontier, Rossi Rio Bravo, Uberti Silverboy and Chiappa LA322 are all in the range, in .22 LR or .22 Mag. Pick .22 LR for rabbits and plinking. If you want a bit more reach, go .22 Mag, but the ammo costs more.
