What's the best .308 rifle in Australia?
There isn't one right answer, but there's a right answer for you. Start with how you hunt.
For long walks after deer, a lighter rifle earns its keep. The Tikka T3x Lite and Hunter and the Bergara Wilderness Sierra Carbon are good starting points. If you shoot further or off a rest, a heavier barrel and a better stock help you settle. The Bergara B14 HMR is set up that way, and it also comes in a left-handed model.
If space in the ute is tight, the Bergara BA13 take-down breaks in two for travel. Builders can grab a Howa barrelled action and put it in the stock or chassis they want.
Barrel length and recoil
A shorter barrel is handier in the scrub and swings faster. A longer barrel gets a bit more speed out of each round. The .308 recoils more than a .223, so if you're new to centrefire, a muzzle brake or a heavier rifle makes it easier to shoot well.
Rifle and scope packages
A package gets you to the range sorted, with no fuss matching the parts. If you've already got a scope you trust, buy the bare rifle instead.
Tell us what you're after and where you hunt, and we'll help you pick the right .308.
