Reading the Stellar model names
HIKMICRO's codes are logical once you know them. On Stellar (and Panther), the letter after the series tells you the sensor: H = 384×288, Q = 640×512. The number is the objective lens in millimetres, and an L means a built-in laser rangefinder. So a Stellar SH35L is a 384 sensor, 35mm lens, with a rangefinder; an SQ50L is a 640 sensor, 50mm lens, with a rangefinder.
SH (384) vs SQ (640): what actually changes
The temptation is to assume the 640 "sees further." It doesn't — on the same lens, both sensors put a target at roughly the same distance, because reach is driven by the objective lens, not the sensor's pixel count. What the sensor changes is the field of view:
