DNT gives you a lot of thermal for the money. The Hydra is a straight thermal scope, and the Hydra LRF 650R adds a rangefinder for open country. Once the lens is sorted, choose thermal plus night vision or thermal only, then a rangefinder, ballistic calculator, battery and mount. Zulus is a different kind of scope: digital day/night with no thermal.

Why grab a monocular too

35 mm: fence lines, scrub and mixed paddocks

Most rabbits, pigs and foxes around fence lines and mixed country turn up inside 150 m. For thermal and night vision in one, have a look at the ThermNight TNC635R and TNC335R, or the TNC225R for closer country. For thermal only, there's the Hydra LRF 635R, HS635 and HS325.

50 mm: open country and foxes further out

If you're picking out foxes across open paddocks past 150 m, often around 250 m, go 50 mm. That's the 650R on our DNT Hydra LRF page, or have a look at other brands on Thermal Scopes Australia. ThermNight only comes in 25 and 35 mm, so it's not the one for open-paddock foxes.

Why buy a thermal monocular before a DNT thermal scope?

It's safer and quicker. You find and identify the animal with the handheld, then bring the rifle up only when you're ready. DNT's Hound handhelds are on DNT Optics Australia.

35 mm or 50 mm?

Inside about 150 m, a 35 mm ThermNight or Hydra is plenty. For foxes across open country around 250 m, go the Hydra LRF 650R.

ThermNight or Hydra?

Go ThermNight if you want thermal and digital night vision in one scope. Go Hydra if you just want thermal for the shot. Then decide if you'd like a rangefinder.
