- Magnification
- What you can tell
The view starts at this unit's own magnification. The further away the animal, and the wider the field of view, the less detail the sensor picks up, until you can tell something warm is there but not what it is. Zooming in makes it bigger, not sharper.
- Magnification
- Sharpness
Digital zoom crops the sensor image and enlarges what is left. It adds no detail, so each step makes the picture bigger but softer.

Omer Karamollaoglu (CC BY 2.0) and Alexis Lours (CC BY 4.0). Field of view and zoom are simulated from this unit's 640×512 sensor and 35 mm lens, 2.2× base magnification and 1600×1200 screen. Real results change with weather, display and settings.

A 640×512 thermal scope with the laser rangefinder built in. You get a wide, detailed picture and a distance reading in one unit, so you're not juggling a second device in the dark.
Here's what that means in the paddock. The 640×512 sensor and 35 mm lens give a 12.5° × 10° field of view, about 22 m wide at 100 m, so you cover more ground without panning as much. The laser rangefinder reads out to 1,000 m and works with the built-in ballistic calculator, so you range the animal and set your hold in one go.
It runs on a replaceable 18650 battery, good for about 6 hours each, so you can swap one in the field and keep going. It's sealed to IP67, rated for recoil up to 6,000 J, and sits in standard 30 mm rings.
Best for: foxes, rabbits, pigs and deer inside about 150 m, where the wide view and built-in rangefinder do the work. Not for: anyone chasing tight, long-reach magnification. It's 2.2× optical with 1–4× digital zoom (up to 8.8× in all), built for a wide, quick pickup. Not sure if it suits how you hunt? Tell us where and what you're after and we'll point you to the right scope.

Why you'd pick the IBEX 635L
A wide 640×512 picture, a laser rangefinder and a ballistic calculator in one scope-style unit. Here's what each bit does in the field.

01 · The picture
A wide view of the paddock
The 640×512 sensor behind a 35 mm F0.8 lens gives a 12.5° × 10° view, about 22 m wide at 100 m. The IBEX 335L, with the same lens and a 384×288 sensor, covers about 13 m at 100 m (ThermTec manual). That's less panning to find the animal. ThermTec's AI calibration also cuts how often the shutter clicks, so the picture freezes less.
- 640×512
- 12 µm pitch
- NETD <18 mK
- 50 Hz

02 · Rangefinder and ballistics
Range it, then hold on it
A laser rangefinder to 1,000 m is built into the tube, so there's no second unit to carry or mount. Short-press the LRF button and the distance is on the screen. Zero the scope, switch on the ballistic calculator, and enter your scope height, bullet weight, muzzle velocity, BC and conditions to get an aiming point. It's only as good as the numbers you give it, so check it on a real shot.
- LRF to 1,000 m
- Ballistic calculator
- Needs a zero first

03 · Zero and controls
Zero it once, keep it
Six zeroing profiles (A to F) store the distance, bullet type and crosshair position, so one scope can serve a few rifles or loads. Freeze zeroing holds the picture while you move the reticle onto the bullet hole. Pick from eight reticles in five colours. Focus is one knob in the central turret on top. Zoom is 1–4× digital on the 2.2× optical, up to 8.8× in all.
- 6 zeroing profiles
- 8 reticles
- 5 reticle colours
- 2.2–8.8×

04 · Recording and app
Records the shot for you
Recoil Activated Video records the moments before, during and after the shot, so you don't have to hit record. 64 GB of onboard memory holds photos and video, with audio if you want it. Switch on the scope's hotspot, connect the ThermTec Outdoor app, and you can watch live, copy files to your phone and update the firmware.
- Recoil Activated Video
- 64 GB
- Hotspot + app

05 · Build and power
Built for recoil and weather
Rated for up to 6,000 J of recoil on a rifled weapon and sealed to IP67. It runs from −20 to +50 °C, weighs about 770 g and measures 342 × 86 × 73 mm. It sits in standard 30 mm rings. Power is a replaceable 18650, up to 6 hours each. Two come in the box with a charger, so you can swap one in the field.
- IP67
- 6,000 J
- 770 g
- 6 h per battery
What it's good for
A wide view and a built-in rangefinder make this a close-to-mid-range scope for foxes, rabbits, pigs and deer. That's where it earns its keep.
Good for
Foxes
A fox is small and quick, and the wide 12.5° view helps you find it without hunting around the screen. Range it with the built-in laser, then hold using the ballistic calculator. Inside about 150 m you'll know a fox when you see one.
Good for
Rabbits
Rabbits show up as small warm dots well out from you. ThermTec's own chart puts rabbit-height detection at about 300 m, but you'll want them a lot closer to be sure of what you're looking at.
Good for
Pigs
Pigs are bigger and easier to pick up. ThermTec's chart gives about 700 m for boar-height detection (0.7 m tall). That's spotting a warm shape, not identifying it. Inside about 150 m you get a proper look at the animal.
Good for
Deer
Deer on the edge of timber or paddock suit the wide view. Range the animal, and make sure you've identified it and know what's behind it before you shoot.
How far ThermTec says it detects
From the ThermTec IBEX series manual, 35 mm lens. Detection means you can see something warm is there, not what it is. Real results depend on weather and the target.
Where it's not the pick
Shots past about 150 m where you need to be certain what you're looking at. At 2.2× optical with 1–4× digital zoom, it's built for a wide, quick pickup, not long reach.
If that's how you hunt, tell us where and what you shoot and we'll point you to a bigger lens. Call 1300 486 444.

Questions we get
How far will it see?
ThermTec rates detection at up to 1,800 m for a man-sized target. On its chart, boar-height is about 700 m and rabbit-height about 300 m. That's seeing something warm, not knowing what it is. For a confident ID with this 35 mm lens, think inside about 150 m.
Does the rangefinder work with the ballistic calculator?
Yes. The ballistic calculator uses the laser range, and the scope needs zeroing first. With it switched on, the scope goes into single-ranging mode. You enter scope height, bullet weight, muzzle velocity, BC, wind and temperature.
Will it handle my rifle's recoil?
ThermTec rates it for up to 6,000 J of recoil on a rifled weapon, and it fits standard 30 mm rings. It doesn't publish a calibre list, so if yours is a heavy hitter, call us on 1300 486 444 before you order.
How long do the batteries last?
Up to 6 hours per 18650, according to ThermTec. Two come in the box with a charger, and the scope can also charge over USB-C. Real run time depends on how you use it and the temperature.
Can I use it with my phone?
Yes. Switch on the scope's hotspot, join it from your phone and open the ThermTec Outdoor app. You can watch live, copy photos and video across, and update the firmware.
