Keep your day scope and add thermal for the night. For closer shots, the Nocpix MATE H38R, ThermTec Hunt Pro 335 or ZEISS DTC 3/38 will do the job. For foxes across open country, try the Nocpix MATE MH50R, HIKMICRO Thunder TQ50CL 3.0, ThermTec Hunt Pro 650L or Pulsar Krypton 2 XG50. Running high-magnification glass? The Nocpix MATE ULTRA S60R is built for it. Tell us your day scope and we'll check the fit.
What else to think about. The adapter ring for your scope, how much zoom your day scope really runs, whether you want a rangefinder, the extra weight up front, battery life, and whether it can double as a handheld with an eyepiece. Why a clip-on — and why a spotter first
The big win with a clip-on is that you keep your day scope. Your reticle stays the same and, fitted properly, so does your zero, though it's worth checking point of impact after you put it on. One clip-on can move between rifles too. Because it lives on the rifle, you'll still want a handheld to find animals, so you're not pointing the rifle around to look. There's a full range on Thermal Monoculars Australia.
35 mm: closer country
Most of your hunting inside 150 m? Rabbits, foxes in scrub, timber edges and tight paddocks all suit a 35–38 mm clip-on. The Nocpix MATE H38R runs a 38 mm lens and 640 sensor, with a rangefinder and ballistics built in. The ThermTec Hunt Pro 335 gives you a similar lens in the Hunt Pro body. If your day scope is ZEISS, the ZEISS DTC 3/38 is the natural match. Shooting foxes out around 250 m? Go 50 mm. Cranking the day scope's zoom or adding a rangefinder won't make a smaller lens see further.
50 mm: open country and foxes at distance
Open paddocks, foxes past 150 m and longer feral shots call for 50 mm. The Nocpix MATE MH50R is a real favourite here, with ranging and ballistics on board. The HIKMICRO Thunder TQ50CL 3.0 pairs a 50 mm lens and 640 sensor with a rangefinder. Want the laser on the clip-on? The ThermTec Hunt Pro 650L has it, and the Hunt 650 PRO skips it. The Pulsar Krypton 2 XG50 is compact, 50 mm and 640, with no rangefinder, so you'd range another way. A bigger sensor shows you more of the scene in more detail; the lens is what gives you the distance.
60 mm — high-magnification day glass / maximum detail
At the top of the MATE range, the Nocpix MATE ULTRA S60R pairs a 60 mm lens with a 1280 sensor. It's made for big, high-magnification day scopes and for anyone after the sharpest picture possible. For most fox shooting around 250 m, a 50 mm clip-on does the job for less. As always, get the right adapter and make sure it suits your scope's zoom.
Adapters
The adapter ring holds the clip-on to the front of your scope. Measure the outside of the objective housing (not the glass) and pick the size to match. Thunder uses Rusan rings, and Krypton uses Pulsar PSP rings: PSP-50B, PSP-56B, PSP-42B and PSP-30B. Want to use your clip-on as a handheld too? The Rusan 3× and 2.5× monocular adapters and the Pulsar 5×30 B turn it into one, though a proper monocular still spots better. Our fit guide goes step by step.

Thermal clip-ons Australia — FAQ
Do I still need a thermal monocular if I buy a clip-on?
We'd say yes. The clip-on is on the rifle for the shot, so a handheld is the way to find animals. An eyepiece adapter lets some clip-ons work off the rifle, but a proper monocular is better for spotting.
35 mm or 50 mm?
Inside about 150 m, 35–38 mm: the MATE H38R, Hunt Pro 335 or DTC 3/38. For foxes at 250 m and anything else you want to pick out past 150 m, 50 mm: the MATE MH50R, Thunder TQ50CL, Hunt Pro 650L or Krypton 2 XG50. More zoom on your day scope won't make a 35 mm clip-on see as far.
Clip-on or dedicated thermal scope?
If you love your day scope and want to keep its zero at night, go clip-on. If the rifle is mostly for night work and you're happy to swap the day scope off, a dedicated thermal scope is the way. Either way, pick the lens size for how far you shoot. More in clip-on vs dedicated.
Will I have to re-zero?
A properly fitted clip-on shouldn't change your day scope's zero, but check your point of impact after the first fit. The usual reason things go out is the wrong size adapter, so measure the housing and match the ring.
Is Hunt The Night a thermal clip-on dealer in Australia?
Yes. We sell genuine Australian HIKMICRO, Nocpix, Pulsar and ThermTec stock with local warranty. Send us your day scope details and we'll make sure the clip-on fits.
