- Needs = quarry + typical shot distance + role. Role answers: is this rifle a day-and-night gun that must keep its existing glass, or a night-first gun that can wear a dedicated thermal? Distance then locks the objective lens on whichever form you pick. Up to ~150 m → ~35 mm class. Past ~150 m → 50 mm+. Foxes at 250 m → you Need 50 mm. When a clip-on is the Need
A thermal clip-on mounts in front of a day riflescope. It is a ~1× pass-through: your day glass supplies magnification, reticle and the zero you already know. That is the job — not “thermal on a budget,” and not a replacement for a handheld spotter.
Choose a clip-on when the Need looks like this:
- One rifle, day and night, keep the glass. You have a day scope you trust, you shoot that rifle in legal light, and after dark you want the same reticle, the same holds and (in principle) the same zero. - One thermal attachment, more than one rifle. The clip-on moves between rifles that already wear day scopes, provided each has the correct adapter and you verify POI on each host. That is a role, not a saving.
- You will not retire the day optic. If the rifle has to stay a conventional day gun, a dedicated thermal that replaces the scope is the wrong form. Clip-on is the Need.
A clip-on is still the wrong answer if night work is most of what that rifle does, you do not care about keeping day glass, and you want rangefinding, a thermal reticle and controls under your shooting hand without an adapter stack. That is a dedicated-scope Need — not a reason to “try a clip-on first.”
When a dedicated thermal scope is the Need
A dedicated thermal riflescope replaces the day optic. It has its own display, reticle, zoom and (on many current units) a built-in laser rangefinder. It is the job when:
- Night is the rifle’s main job — feral control after dark, a fox or pig rifle that rarely wears day glass. Grab-and-go, one zero, no adapter.
- You want the thermal system to aim — onboard reticle, ballistic tools and LRF in one housing, without depending on a day-scope magnification window.
- Balance and speed at the shoulder matter more than keeping existing glass. Front-hanging mass on a clip-on is a Consideration; on a night-first rifle it is often a reason to pick dedicated form.

Lens class still applies on a clip-on
Buying a clip-on does not excuse skipping millimetres. The clip-on’s objective still sets how much thermal energy you gather and how the scene is projected. The day scope only magnifies the clip-on’s display.
- Need: shots mostly ≤~150 m (rabbits and foxes in scrub, tighter timber, closer pigs) → ~35 mm-class clip-on. Monocular first — a clip-on is not your spotter
Hard rule: scan with a handheld thermal monocular before you clip on or raise a dedicated scope. Glassing a paddock through a riflescope is slow, poor muzzle discipline, and a reliable way to educate every fox in the district. Find heat, identify, then mount up.
Some clip-ons can take an eyepiece and be used as a handheld. That is a Consideration, not a Need. It does not replace a purpose-built spotter for scanning, and it does not make “why buy two devices” a fit method. Once quarry, distance and role have pointed you at clip-on or dedicated — and at 35 mm or 50 mm — these are the questions that change the SKU.
Day-scope window, adapter and POI
Clip-ons have a recommended magnification window on the host scope. Inside it the picture stays usable; well beyond it you are optically enlarging a small display and the image goes coarse. On a clip-on, higher sensor and display resolution hold detail as the day scope magnifies the screen. That is why 640 (and 1280) earn their keep under higher host magnification. They still do not add millimetres of glass. A 640 / 35 mm clip-on is a wider, more detailed 35 mm picture — not a 250 m fox optic. Dedicated scopes follow the same rule: lock 35 vs 50 first, then 384 vs 640 for FOV/detail.
LRF, weight and “two-in-one”
