How to Choose a Thermal for Remote Mounting

2 min read · 3 October 2026 · Hunt The Night

Remote mounting a thermal comes down to four things.

1. Purpose-built unit or a standard monocular?

We have a few units built specifically for remote mounting, with things like image stabilisation and full 360 tilt and pan. The other option is to take a normal monocular and mount it to your spotlight handle.

2. How secure is the mount?

You want the unit held properly, not just hanging off the screw on the bottom. We sell a range of mounting kits for remote mounting monoculars, and the gun clamp style ones are the best.

3. How good is the app?

You'll want to control the unit from your phone over its own wifi. With built-in wifi you don't need phone reception or anything like that. The unit makes its own network and your phone or tablet connects straight to it. The best apps, in this order, are ThermTec, HIKMICRO, Pulsar and InfiRay.

4. Rangefinder or not?

A rangefinder on a remote-mounted unit is incredibly handy. It gives you a point of reference for the distance to your target.
