The view starts at this unit's own magnification. The further away the animal, and the wider the field of view, the less detail the sensor picks up, until you can tell something warm is there but not what it is. Zooming in makes it bigger, not sharper.

HWY use

I spend a fair bit of time travelling up and down the Stuart Highway at night, and I’ve been putting the Nocpix NS7 vehicle-mounted thermal camera to good use.

For spotting cattle, buffalo, donkeys and horses on or near the highway, it’s been doing a great job. Being able to pick up animals in the darkness before you’re right on top of them is a big advantage, particularly in the NT where livestock and feral animals are a constant hazard.

Would I use it as a hunting aid in the bush? NO.

The image quality and detail aren’t where I’d want them for that sort of work. But that’s not really what I’m using it for.

What would I improve? I’d love to see Nocpix release an upgraded version with a 384-resolution sensor. That extra image detail would make a worthwhile difference, particularly at longer distances.

For me, the NS7 is a road safety aid, not a hunting thermal, and there’s a big difference between the two.

My verdict? It does what I need it to do on the highway. There’s room for improvement, but I’m happy with its performance for that purpose.

And like any thermal system, it’s an extra set of eyes, not a replacement for paying attention behind the wheel.

Yeah….nah

I’m an early adopter so was really keen for this to be good. Its a great idea but the quality of the sensor really lets it down. Then again for just $1200 what do you expect? If it had a 384 sensor it could be very good indeed. For driving it towns its fine, but you have headlights and eyeballs for that and the ns7 is merely a distraction that beeps a lot. In paddocks on shoots, my objective the sensors just isn’t upto it. If they upgrade it with a 384 sensor i’d be very interested.
