Compare what each thermal sees
Pick up to three devices and an animal, then slide the distance. A wider field of view covers more ground, but shows less detail on the animal, so it turns into a blob sooner.
Example images only. Pig and deer stills supplied by HIKMICRO and Nocpix; fox and rabbit are thermal-style images we made from photos by A. Omer Karamollaoglu (CC BY 2.0) and Alexis Lours (CC BY 4.0). None were filmed through these devices. Each view starts at the device's own magnification and is simulated from its sensor, lens and screen. Distances use the classic Johnson criteria (2, 8 and 13 sensor pixels) across the animal's shoulder height (rabbit 0.2 m, fox 0.38 m, pig 0.7 m, deer 0.9 m). Makers' box ranges are for a 1.7 m tall target, so they are longer and not directly comparable. Real results change with weather, display and settings.
